Lymphedema and Exercise

The Lymphedema Prevention Program at ReQuest Physical Therapy is all about keeping you healthy and getting you back to what feels like normal. An important factor in staying healthy is exercise.
Research shows that an exercise program is essential for appropriate lymphedema management. It is important to exercise under the direction of a certified lymphedema therapist, as you will have to start small with low resistance, low reps, and slowly progress as your body allows. A proper exercise program will help strengthen your body to withstand the daily stresses that could lead to lymphedema and help prevent the onset of lymphedema.
Typically, you can expect an exercise plan to involve some combination of:
- Strength Training
- Aerobic Training
- Manual Therapy (hands-on)
- Stretches to improve mobility
- Exercises specifically targeted to help move lymph fluid along
There is no “one size fits all” approach to exercise and everyone is different. You may find that some exercises may be challenging but that is okay. Dr. Payton will work with you to create a customized program that will be both effective and manageable.
Lymphedema is not the end-all-be-all. Especially with a well-managed plan, there is no reason why someone with damage to their lymphatic system should have to spend the rest of their life avoiding activities.
Our goal is to empower you throughout this process while providing you with the resources needed in this lifelong commitment towards health!
