Getting Back Into Exercise as a Cancer Survivor

The safest way to get back into a steady exercise routine is to work with a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) or a doctor of physical therapy (DPT) that specializes in breast cancer rehabilitation.  If you decide to come to ReQuest, you will work with Dr. Payton McWilliams, PT, DPT, CLT.

As our patient, you will also have access to Gainesville Health and Fitness http://www.ghfc.com/.  They offer an exclusive Women only facility as well as up to 2 hours of free childcare per day.

 Please keep in mind:

  • You can always start a cancer recovery exercise program – it is NEVER too late.
  • There will be times that you will not have the energy to exercise and that is okay.
  • Walking is the easiest and safest exercise to start with when you are returning to a fitness routine.
  • Your workout plan should be individualized to meet your needs and personal goals.
  • Pay attention to your body!  Watch your arm, hand, chest, shoulder, breast, and neck for swelling, redness, or pain. You want to closely monitor your body for any changes and communicate with your healthcare providers (physical therapist) about such changes
  • Start with lighter weights and shorter distances than you did before.
  • Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.

If you have any concerns about starting an exercise program, we are here to help.  Please call 373-2116 or email samantha.ream@requestphysicaltherapy.com for more information.
